Cutting DTF film cost: gang your sheets (worked example)

If DTF film is eating your margin, the fix is usually free: stop printing one design per sheet. Ganging is the single biggest lever on your film cost.

The idea: DTF film is priced by the sheet (or by the linear foot / meter). Every inch of blank film you print over is wasted money. Nesting multiple designs — across different jobs, even — onto one sheet spreads that cost.

A quick example:

• Say a sheet costs you a fixed amount and you print one 8" design centered on it. Most of that sheet is empty and wasted.
• Rotate and tuck four designs from different orders onto the same sheet and your per-design film cost drops by roughly 60–75%.

How to gang well:

1. Batch by cure, not by customer. Group designs that use the same film/powder and press settings so a whole sheet runs together.
2. Rotate to fit. Turn designs 90° and nest tall next to short to close the gaps.
3. Mind the spacing. Leave enough gap to cut cleanly, but no more.
4. Print in batches, not one-offs. A daily/half-daily DTF batch beats firing the printer for a single transfer.

Keeping your gang sheets tight is boring, repetitive, and one of the most profitable habits in a DTF shop.
