HTV corners lifting after the first wash — press spec help

Heat-transfer vinyl that looks great but starts peeling at the corners after a wash is one of the most common (and fixable) HTV problems. It's almost always application, not the vinyl itself.

Run this checklist:

Pressure — the usual culprit. HTV needs firm, even pressure, not just heat. A soft home-style press or a worn platen leaves you under-pressed and it peels. Press hard.
Temperature and time to the vinyl's spec. Every HTV type is different — check the manufacturer's numbers. Under-time and under-temp both cause lifting.
Peel hot vs. cold as specified. Cold-peel vinyl peeled hot (or vice versa) lifts. This is written on the vinyl's spec sheet for a reason.
Prep the garment. A quick 2–3 second pre-press drives out moisture and flattens the fabric so the vinyl makes full contact. Moisture is a hidden peel cause.
Fabric compatibility. Some HTV isn't rated for certain fabrics (e.g. standard HTV on waterproof nylon). Match the vinyl to the garment.
Layering. If you stacked layers, an under-pressed base layer peels and takes the rest with it.

Nine times out of ten it's pressure or the wrong peel. Post the vinyl brand, your press temp/time/pressure, and a close-up of the lifting corner on the thread and folks here can usually pinpoint it.

Agree it's usually pressure. The quiet killer people forget is the pre-press — 2–3 seconds to flatten and dry the garment before the vinyl goes down. Skip it and you're pressing vinyl onto a slightly damp, textured surface, and it lets go at the edges first.

Also: if you're using a lower-cost heat press with an uneven platen, the corners are exactly where the pressure drops off. That's not a you problem, it's a hardware problem — worth checking your press for even contact with a dollar-bill test across the platen.
