Embroidery puckering on polos — backing or hooping?

Puckering (that wrinkled, tunneled look around the stitching) is the most common embroidery complaint, and it almost always comes down to stabilizer and hooping. Here's the checklist I run.

Stabilizer:

Match backing to fabric. Stretchy/knit fabrics (polos, tees, performance) need a cutaway — it stays put and supports the stitches through wear and wash. Tearaway on a knit is a leading cause of puckering.
Weight up for dense designs. A high-stitch-count logo needs more support. Too-light backing lets the fabric pull in.
Add a topping (water-soluble film) on piqué/terry so stitches don't sink.

Hooping:

Hoop the garment AND the backing together, drum-tight and flat. Don't hoop loose and don't stretch the fabric — hoop it so it's taut but not distorted.
A loose hoop lets everything shift, and shift = pucker + registration drift.

Digitizing:

Proper underlay and push/pull compensation are built into the file. If the design was poorly digitized, no amount of backing fully saves it.

Start by matching a proper cutaway to the fabric and hooping tight — that fixes the large majority of puckering. Post a photo (front and back of the sew-out) on the thread and an experienced digitizer can usually spot the rest.

This is the right order to troubleshoot in. The mistake I see most: reaching for tearaway because it's faster to clean up, on a garment that needed cutaway. On anything with stretch, cutaway is not optional.

And the back-of-the-sew-out photo genuinely matters — loose bobbin tension, poor underlay, and hooping distortion all leave different fingerprints on the back of the stitching that you can't see from the front. When in doubt, show the back.
